Question # 254: Is there any specific duaa etc. that one can read to get good marriage partner? Jazzakumu Allahu Khairun

Bismi-llahi r-raḥmani r-raḥīm,

Assalamu ‘laikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

All praise and thanks are due to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم).

Dear questioner,

First of all, we implore Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) to help us serve His cause and render our work for His sake.

Shorter Answer: Although we do not know of any specific du’aa for finding a good marriage partner from the Sunnah, the invoker should seek out the best time, when du’aa is answered, such as during last one-third of the night, last hour of Friday, interval between adhan and iqamah, during sujood (prostration) in salah, after final tashahhud and before salaam in salah, when it’s raining, at a certain time of the night, a certain time on Friday, when hearing the crowing of a rooster, during day of fasting, and during traveling. Lastly, one should remember, there is no man who prays to Allah and makes du’aa to Him, and does not receive a response. Either it will be hastened for him in this world, or it will be stored up for him in the Hereafter. Also Refer Question # 181 (Etiquettes of making Du’aa)

Long Answer: Although we do not know of any specific du’aa for finding a good marriage partner from the Sunnah, the invoker should seek out the best time, when du’aa is answered. Here is a list of some of such times from the authentic sunnah:

  • Last third of the night: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven when there is one third of the night left, and He says, ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer? Who will ask of Me, that I may give to him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?’ – until the dawn comes.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • Last hour of Friday: “The last hour of Friday – there is no Muslim slave who stands and prays and calls upon Allah at that time, but Allah will grant that to him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • Interval between the adhan and iqamah: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “Du’aa made between the adhan and iqamah will not be refused.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Ahmad; al-Tirmidhi said, (it is) a sahih hasan hadith).
  • During prostration: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “With regard to sujood, offer lots of du’aa then, for it is more likely that you will receive a response.” (Narrated by Muslim). The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “The closest that a person is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so say a great deal of du’aa” (Narrated by Muslim)
  • After saying the final tashahhud and before saying the salaam: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said, “Then let him say whatever du’aa he wants.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • When it’s raining: In the hadith of Sahl ibn Sa’d that is attributed to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم): “There are two which will not be rejected: du’aa at the time of the call (to prayer) and when it is raining.” (Narrated by Abu Dawood and classed as sahih by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’)
  • At a certain time of the night: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “During the night there is a time when the Muslim does not ask for the good of this world and the Hereafter but it will be given to him, and that happens every night.” (Narrated by Muslim)
  • A certain time on Friday: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) mentioned Friday and said: “During it there is a time when a Muslim slave does not stand and pray and ask Allah for something, but He will give it to him,” and he gestured with his hand to indicate how short that time is. (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • When hearing the crowing of a rooster: “When you hear the crowing of a rooster, ask Allah of His bounty, for he has seen an angel.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • During the day of fasting: It was narrated in a sahih report that Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “There are three prayers that are not rejected: the prayer of a father for his child, the prayer of the fasting person and the prayer of the traveler.” (Narrated by al-Bayhaqi; see Saheeh al-Jaami’; al-Saheehah)
  • During traveling: (See hadith above)

Know that a person’s du’aa is never wasted, and it benefits him in all situations, as it says in the hadith which was narrated by al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: ‘There is no man who prays to Allah and makes du’aa to Him, and does not receive a response. Either it will be hastened for him in this world, or it will be stored up for him in the Hereafter, so long as he does not pray for something sinful, or to cut the ties of kinship, or seek a speedy response.’ They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what does seeking a speedy response mean?’ He said, ‘Saying, “I prayed to my Lord and He did not answer me.”’” (Al-Tirmidhi; classed as sahih by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi)
