Question # 575: Assalamualaikum, I want to ask about this hadith; Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: “An old woman came to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, beseech Allah to let me enter the Garden of Paradise!’ He replied: ‘O Mother of So-and-so, no old woman will enter the Garden of Paradise!’ She turned away weeping, so he said: ‘Tell her that she will not enter it as an old woman, for Allah says: ‘We have created them a new creation, and made them virgins, loving, equal in age [inna ansha’na-hunna insha’a: fa-ja’alna-hunna abkara ‘uruban atraba].’” (Al-Qur’an; 56:35-37) Ash-Shama’il Al-Muhammadiyah 239

1. Why didn’t the Prophet ﷺ apologize to the elderly woman when she cried after misunderstanding his truthful and purposeful statement, even though he intentionally used a surprising joke to capture her attention and curiosity? Is making clarification without apologizing is enough?

2. Why the Prophet ﷺ use humor in this serious situation, considering it caused temporary emotional distress to the elderly woman? why not just speaking directly and clearly about the matter from the beginning?

3. If someone misunderstands a truthful statement and becomes sad, is the one who made the truthful statement obligated to apologize in Islam?

And i want to ask how to understand if there’s a hadith like this that in some point seemed to be contradict with Qur’an and Sunnah Guidance itself, I know that these questions occur because of my shallow understanding in this realm, I’d like to ask your insight about this matter, thank you, jazakallahu khair

Assalamu ‘laikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

All praise and thanks are due to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم).

Dear questioner,

First of all, we implore Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) to help us serve His cause and render our work for His sake.

Shorter Answer: The hadith in question is graded as da’eef (weak) by some scholars, while others consider it hasan (good). Despite its debated authenticity, its message aligns with broader Islamic teachings. Next, to address the question raised about this hadith, here are the key insights:

  • The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) did not apologize because his statement was truthful and intentional. His clarification served as a teaching moment, revealing a deeper truth about Paradise.
  • The use of humor or surprising statements was a common teaching method employed by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) to capture attention and create lasting impressions.
  • While the elderly woman experienced momentary sadness, the ultimate message was one of hope and joy. This approach often leads to a more profound understanding of the concept being conveyed.
  • In Islam, if someone misunderstands a truthful statement and becomes sad, the speaker is not obligated to apologize. However, clarification and kindness are encouraged, as demonstrated by the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و سلم) approach in this situation.

Further, when encountering seemingly contradictory hadiths, it’s crucial to approach them methodically. First, verify the hadith’s authenticity; next, seek to understand the full context, as apparent contradictions often arise from misunderstanding the purpose or rhetorical techniques used. Consulting scholars is essential; also, consider the overall message of Islam rather than focusing on isolated incidents. Lastly, recognize that our own understanding may be limited, and apparent contradictions might stem from incomplete knowledge.

Long Answer: Before we delve into answering the question, let’s talk about the authenticity of the hadith under consideration. This hadith is graded as Da’eef (weak) in terms of its chain of narration (isnad) by Zubair ‘Alza’i (Sunnah.com). Also, Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem, in his video series (Episode 37) on YouTube on Ash Shamil Al Muhammadiyah mentions that the hadith about an old woman coming to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم), as reported by Hasan Al-Basri, has been subject to differing scholarly opinions regarding its authenticity. Imam Al-Albani graded it as Hasan (good), while other scholars classified it as weak. The discrepancy in grading arises from several factors:

  • Hasan Al-Basri was a Tabi’i and not a companion of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم), which categorizes this hadith as mursal (a hadith that omits one or more transmitters in the chain of narration, leaving a gap between the successor and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم)). This status is significant because it affects the reliability of the report. Some scholars accept mursal narrations from Hasan Al-Basri, while others do not, leading to differing views on the hadith’s authenticity.
  • Al-Albani may have found other chains or supporting evidence that strengthened the hadith‘s status in his assessment. The grading of hadiths involves a degree of scholarly judgment, which can result in varying opinions among scholars.
  • While the hadith is considered weak by some, the fact that it has been mentioned by reputable imams and graded as Hasan (sound) by Al-Albani makes it worthy of consideration. However, caution should be exercised regarding its authenticity.

[This hadith is mentioned in] the book ‘Ash-Shamaa’il Al-Muhammadiyyah’ by Abu ʻEesa At-Tirmidhi, [which is considered] a great book in its field; however, there are some weak, inauthentic ahadith cited therein. [It is a great reminder for us that] no book is free of criticism save the Book of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى); all other books consist of human production. Imam Ash-Shafiʻi said, “Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) willed that no book would be infallible save His Book.”

Nevertheless, the meaning of the hadith is consistent with broader Islamic teachings, such as the idea of spiritual renewal and transformation in the afterlife. The Qur’an (Soorah Al-Waqi’ah, 56:35-37) also mentions how people in Paradise will be made youthful and free from defects. So, although it is important to verify the authenticity of the narration, the general message aligns with Islamic principles.

The Prophet’s Communication Style

  • Clarification without Apology: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) did not apologize because his statement was truthful and intentional and was not intended to harm or insult but to guide. His clarification served as a teaching moment, revealing a deeper truth about the nature of Paradise. Moreover, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) had the wisdom to understand that the woman would benefit more from the clarification of the truth than from an apology, which might have diluted the lesson. Although not expressing an overt apology, the clarifying message delivered afterward indicated consideration for her feelings and aimed at alleviating her sorrow. An apology can be an act of politeness, but the essential consideration lies in the preservation of truth and kindness, and the emphasis on clarity often suffices without an explicit apology. Thus, it can be argued that clarifying his intent sufficed in this instance, reflecting the balance between humor, respect, and guidance he demonstrated.
  • Use of Humor in Serious Situations: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) often used surprising statements or gentle humor to capture attention and then immediately clarified them. This approach can be more effective than direct statements, as it engages the listener and creates a lasting impression. Humor in the Prophet’s contexts served as a method to foster connection, alleviate tension, and facilitate the absorption of significant spiritual truths. By employing humor in serious conversations, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) was not diminishing the gravity of the topic but rather encouraging deeper contemplation and engagement. The sudden realization conveyed through shock can often lead to a more significant understanding than straightforward declarations, effectively capturing the listener’s attention for a more profound insight. It should not be forgotten that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) had deep empathy for his companions and those around him, and his statements were always purposeful. By surprising the woman with an unexpected answer, he ensured that she would seek clarification, which then led to a greater understanding of the eternal rewards of the Hereafter.
  • Temporary Distress for Greater Understanding: The Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و سلم) response to the elderly woman appears intentionally designed to invoke reflection through shock, leading to a clarification aimed at fostering hope rather than distress alone. While the elderly woman experienced momentary sadness, the ultimate message was one of hope and joy. This method of teaching often leads to a more profound and lasting understanding and deep thinking of the concept being conveyed. Furthermore, in Islam, it is crucial to differentiate between causing harm unintentionally and deliberately hurting someone. In this case, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) clarified his point immediately and showed the woman that she would indeed enter Paradise, but in a transformed and rejuvenated form. In Islam, if someone misunderstands a truthful statement and becomes sad, the speaker is not obligated to apologize. However, clarification and kindness are encouraged. The Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و سلم) approach demonstrates that explaining the full meaning and offering comfort can be more beneficial than an apology in such situations.

Understanding Seemingly Contradictory Hadiths

Navigating the apparent contradictions between hadiths and the Qur’an requires a foundational understanding of Islamic jurisprudence. Therefore, when encountering hadiths that seem to contradict Qur’anic teachings or other established Islamic principles:

  • Verify Authenticity: Always check the authenticity of the hadith. Not all hadith are equally authentic; some may have weak chains or unclear narrations. Scholars have developed science to verify the authenticity of hadith (i.e., Ilm al-hadith). If a hadith contradicts clear Qur’anic teachings or widely accepted authentic hadith, it is likely either misunderstood or weak in its transmission.
  • Seek Context: Understanding the full context can often resolve apparent contradictions. Often, the apparent contradiction arises from misunderstanding the context or the purpose behind the statement. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) used a variety of rhetorical techniques to convey complex spiritual ideas, such as humor, parables, or striking statements. These are often symbolic or metaphorical and require deeper reflection.
  • Consult Scholars: Scholars rely on the broader context of Qur’anic and hadith teachings, using principles like al-Qur’an yufassiru ba’dahu ba’dan (the Qur’an explains parts of itself) and al-Qur’an wa al-Sunnah (the Qur’an and Sunnah complement each other) to reconcile apparent contradictions. If a hadith seems to contradict a clear Qur’anic verse, one should seek explanations by referencing scholarly texts or consulting knowledgeable Islamic scholars.
  • Consider the Overall Message: Look at the broader teachings of Islam rather than isolated incidents.
  • Recognize Human Limitations: Our understanding may be limited, and apparent contradictions might be due to our incomplete knowledge.

Allahu A’lam (Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) knows best) and all Perfections belong to Allah, and all mistakes belong to me alone. May Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) forgive me, Ameen.

Wassalaam
