I love my wife dearly and can’t Imagine us apart, But as years go by the urge for another wife is very strong, what are my options? Please help
Assalamu ‘laikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,
All praise and thanks are due to Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger (صلى الله عليه و سلم).
Dear questioner,
First of all, we implore Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) to help us serve His cause and render our work for His sake.
Shorter Answer: Although a man is permitted to marry up to four wives under the condition of equal treatment, it is very important to consider the feelings of the current wife, the husband’s motivations, and the practical challenges involved. Suggested options include open communication, seeking marital counseling, self-reflection, focusing on the existing marriage, and practicing patience and self-restraint. Prioritizing the well-being of the current family is crucial, as taking a second wife without the first wife’s consent could lead to significant marital discord. Seeking guidance through prayer and consultation is recommended.
Long Answer: This is a sensitive and complex issue that requires careful consideration of Islamic principles, personal relationships, and practical realities. While Islam permits polygyny under certain conditions, it is not an obligation. The Qur’an states that a man may marry up to four wives, but only if he can treat them all with equal justice and fairness. However, the Qur’an also acknowledges that achieving perfect equality between wives is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says in the Qur’an, “…marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one…” (Soorah an-Nisa’a, 4:3)
Considerations
- Wife’s Feelings: If one’s wife has clearly expressed strong opposition to the idea of a second wife, her opposition should be taken seriously, as it could significantly impact the existing marriage and family dynamics.
- Motivation: The husband must reflect deeply on the reasons for wanting a second wife, whether it is a genuine need or just a fleeting desire. He should consider whether these needs can be addressed within the current marriage.
- Practical Challenges: Managing multiple households fairly is extremely challenging. It requires significant financial resources, time, and emotional energy.
Options to Consider
- Open Communication: The husband should have an honest, respectful conversation with his wife about his feelings. At the same, he should listen to her concerns and try to understand her perspective.
- Marital Counseling: Seeking guidance from a knowledgeable Islamic scholar or counselor who can provide insight into both religious teachings and personal implications and help mediate discussions between the husband and the wife is a viable option.
- Self-Reflection: The husband should engage in sincere introspection and prayer to seek Allah’s (سبحانه و تعالى) guidance on this matter.
- Focus on Current Marriage: The husband should invest time and effort in strengthening the existing marriage. Addressing issues in the current relationship can often alleviate the desire for another wife.
- Patience: If the urge persists, the husband should practice patience and self-control. It should be remembered that restraining oneself for the sake of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) is a form of worship. Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said, “Certainly, you will never leave something for the sake of Allah, the Mighty & Majestic, except that Allah will replace it with something better.” (Musnad Aḥmad; Al-Silsilah Al-Saheehah, Shaykh Albani: Isnaaduh Saheeh) Also, Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) says in the Qur’an: “But as for him who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from vain desires, verily, Paradise will be his abode.” (Soorah An-Nazi’at, 79:40-41)
It’s crucial to prioritize the well-being of the current family and marriage. Taking a second wife without the first wife’s agreement could lead to significant marital discord and potentially divorce. Consequently, seeking guidance through prayer, reflection, and consultation with knowledgeable and trustworthy scholars/counselors in the community should be of help, إن شاء الله.
Allahu A’lam (Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) knows best) and all Perfections belong to Allah, and all mistakes belong to me alone. May Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) forgive me, Ameen.
Wassalaam
